Apart from offering their usual services in first aid, rescue and firefighting, last Sunday morning was a different experience for a number of the Emergency Fire and Rescue Unit (E.F.R.U.) members who contributed in donating the most precious gift – blood. For some members this was the first experience but for others this was part of their routine. Whatever the case, it was an unforgettable experience for the team who supported one other especially the new blood donors.
This activity had two objectives; primarily to donate blood and help saving a life but not only, one of the team is currently reading for her Masters in Science and as part of her thesis she needed blood samples to analyse and trace certain chemicals which might be harmful and which may be found around us. The E.F.R.U members felt the urge to help and contribute in such a study, not only because it is a team member doing the study but also because the study will be indicative of the level of exposure of a sample of the population to certain harmful chemicals in our environment.
