EFRU Cycling Tour – 2013

April 3, 2013 in General

The Emergency Fire & Rescue Unit will be organising its fourth edition of the ‘EFRU Cycling Tour’. The event will be held in Sicily on the 31st May and 1st June 2013. Cycling enthusiasts at are again showing interest in the event.  This year’s event is limited to 20 participants and 5 EFRU members on first-come, first-served basis.

The route for the 2 day event has been planned for the semi-professional cyclist and will consist of a circular route starting and finishing at Pozzallo with an overnight stay in the vicinity of Catania. The route has already been plotted and the distance calculated to be a staggering 250km.  Of these, 130km will be covered on Friday the 31st and the rest on the way back to Pozzallo on Saturday. As always, great care was taken when choosing the afore-mentioned route. The majority of the ride is amidst the lovely Sicilian countryside with the least possible use of main roads.

As in the past, a rescue team equipped with water, first aid and other necessary supplies will accompany the cyclists at all times, to tend to their needs and ascertain that everyone remains on track.

This year, for the first time we are able to provide the route in various file formats for those equipped with a bicycle GPS. This was made possible thanks to Mr. Mark Gaglione from Medcomms Ltd, who generously provided us with a GPS to track the chosen route during our scouting trip earlier in March. Upon registration, any participating cyclists who wish to pre-install the map on their GPS trackers may contact us on [email protected] and we will email the file in the desired format.

As with previous editions, this year’s fee is that of €300. This includes the ferry, one night stay at an Agriturismo facility, a snack upon arrival, dinner on Friday and breakfast on Saturday. Profits incurred from this event will go directly towards the purchase of a small ambulance which is much needed for our various duties and operations.

As most of you know, the EFRU is an independent non-profit making voluntary organisation, primarily setup to provide backup emergency rescue services to the constituted authorities in the event of national catastrophes. The unit also offers its services to commercial and other non-governmental organisations that may, from time to time, request its services in the form of First Aid and Rescue backup.  The unit specialises in a variety of rescue disciplines such as ‘Light and Heavy’ Rescue, Cliff Rescue, High Angle Rescue, Basic and Advanced Fire-Fighting, Rescue Diving, Urban Search & Rescue (USAR), USAR – K9 and First Aid.

The ‘Emergency Fire & Rescue Unit’ has also set various objectives other than providing emergency backup. We have embarked on basic life skills and community training; hence our ‘Community Assistance Program’ (C.A.P.).  In accordance to this program’s principles, we have already taken part in a number of charity events and are the official First Aid Team of the ‘Puttinu Cares – Children’s Cancer Foundation’ whom we have been voluntarily supporting since 2006.

Our members were also requested by the Civil Protection Department to intervene in various Industrial accidents and Fireworks Factory explosions. The EFRU is also called upon to support the authorities in many mass gatherings in Malta such as the Isle of MTV, the Malta Music Awards, Tree 4U events and other national activities.

For the EFRU to offer its services and function properly, such fund-raising events are of utmost importance.  To date, all related expenses incurred by the organisation are mainly being forked out by the volunteers themselves as the EFRU is not funded or supported in any way.

We look forward to having you on board.

The Emergency Fire & Rescue Unit.
