EFRU Cycling Tour – 2015

July 12, 2015 in General

EFRU Cycling Tour 2015Friday 12th June was a remarkable day for thirteen adventurous cyclists who embarked on the 2015 edition of the Emergency Fire and Rescue Unit’s Cycling for Charity; an annual fund-raising cycling tour organised by and for the EFRU. Picturesque Sicilian villages and the exhilarating countryside scenery of the island were the highlights of an exhausting yet successful and rewarding 300km cycle path. The cycling tour took place in Sicily from the Pozzallo ferry dock to Motta Sant’Anastasia (limits of Catania) and back, over the course of two days.

Since the cycling tour’s first edition way back in 2008, the EFRU volunteers have made tremendous efforts and worked hard to ensure cyclists have the opportunity to annually participate in this unique tour, which is listed as a yearly event on our calendar. The collective planning for such a tour is not an easy task. From months before the actual event, the executive committee together with other EFRU volunteers buckle down to schedule the dates, plan and chart the route, coordinate all logistics, and kickstart the PR and promotions. Also, we prepare and train our back-up team and first aid crew, and replenish all vehicles with the necessary supplies, tools and equipment.

It goes without saying that various personnel deserve merit for this year’s fruitful event. The EFRU organisation, being a non-profit and charitable NGO, relies completely on the constant support of its committed and enthusiastic volunteer members, who dedicate countless hours of hard work throughout the year. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all our devoted members. Special thanks also go to: Go and Fun for supplying our cyclists with Go&Fun isotonic sport drinks throughout the tour, numerous companies who sponsored the cyclists, as well as a number of individuals who presented the Unit with a monetary contribution. Last but not least, our work will continue in earnest thanks to all the cyclists who believed in our Unit and joined the cycling tour for a great time and a good cause.

By virtue of pedalling for a noble cause, the EFRU Cycling Tour event has become an annual appointment for a good number of cyclists to escape from everyday life and immerse themselves in the landscapes and captivating nature sights from their bike’s saddle. The cyclists’ generous giving is in turn a tribute to the service the Unit constantly provides to the community. This year’s charity tour helped us to gain another step closer in procuring a much needed ambulance.

It is through such successful events that the EFRU is inspired to further strive towards touching other persons’ lives, thus fulfilling our motto:taking pride in helping others.
