St Theresa School Mriehel Visit – Nov 2012

November 20, 2012 in General

Today a good number of the Emergency, Fire and Rescue Unit (E.F.R.U.) members attended the 32nd edition of GestFest; an annual activity held at St. Theresa College, Girls’ Secondary School,Mriehel, to collect money for various organizations whose aim is to facilitate the life of people; mainly children with various medical conditions.

E.F.R.U. responded to such a call for help with great enthusiasm. Apart from offering their services to cover any First Aid during the event, they also offered two very interesting talks and demonstrations to all those present. The Emergency Fire & Rescue Unit arrived on site with one Fire Engine, one Rescue Vehicle and one K9 Vehicle.

Jade and Zeya, two dogs that form part of the E.F.R.U. K9 division, immediately stole the show, attracting a good number of spectators who were enthusiastic to learn about the role of dogs in field of Rescue.

The Fire Team members welcomed all those present with an informative talk. The speaker started off by briefly explaining the role of the organization, then moved on to explaining the use of the equipment one finds in a Fire Engine, while two other members demonstrated how the Breathing Apparatus (BA’s) and other equipment is used. The volunteer members ended this part by simulating a preparation for a fire fight. The correct use of the emergency number 112 was outlined during the talk.

Following the talk about fire, it was time for three of the first aiders present to give some basic tips. The E.F.R.U. first aiders chose the more common scenarios; namely fainting, cuts and grazes, nose bleed and the recovery position. Again, a first aider explained the condition and procedure whilst the other two demonstrated.
