E.F.R.U Cycles for Charity 2010

February 9, 2010 in General

The Malta Hospice Movement was founded on 4th January 1989 when the Founding Members, who assumed the role of the first Council of Management, formally signed the Statute which governs the Movement. The Founding Members drew their inspiration from theworkofDameCicely Saunders who opened St Christopher’s Hospice in 1967 and the Movement continues to model itself on her ideals. Dame Cicely’s extraordinary contributiontoalleviating human suffering has resulted in world wide recognition and the mushrooming of palliative care services across the globe. The Malta Hospice Movement is today caring for around 650 patients and their families. Most of our patients have cancer while a small number have motor neurone disease. They come from all over the Maltese Islands. Our services to patients and their families are all free of charge. We welcome everyone and value them as unique individuals, whatever their race, religion or lifestyle.

E.F.R.U. strategy is not just to collect for the above organisation but to crate awareness through this event and help the society to understand the Malta Hospice Movement needs. This year the E.F.R.U. will be organizing the same event for the third consecutive year. This time the organizing committee has opted to keep the same number of days (2 days) as last year. However they will be incising the distance to be covered from 300 to 400 Km. The tour will take place in our neighbor island of Sicily. The reason behind using this because EFRU believes that the fund collected should all be diverted to the charitable institutions and not spent on traveling from one country to the next. The cyclists will generate their own funding for the said trip.
